Design Philosophy

I grew up with a Mom who would paint a new room in our house every month and would constantly change furniture arrangements. Before I knew it I was in my room rearranging furniture once a month and constantly painting my walls and finding new bed comforters etc. It was then that I realized I was developing a passion to design rooms in my home and make frequent trips to Ikea, what seemed to be my new favorite store. It's the way you can show your style through design and have multiple inspirations that create something that I love about design.

ID 277 Field Trip

For one of my Interior Design classes we spent a week in Seattle visting different firms and companies such as tile, paints, and furniture. Our first stop as at the Seattle Design Center where we went into a few of the show rooms. They were all so different and I learned a lot from what each person had to say and even give advice for us. The next couple of days we continued to go to different show rooms and learn a lot of process work and such.
On Friday, our second to last day, our class split up and we each went to a design firm one on one and were able to shadow a designer for a while. The design firm that I was lucky enough to visit was Dawson Design Associates. They are a very small firm with about 14 designers and 3 architects. They were all very busy and the place was filled with so much things, such as process work, furniture dimensions on walls, fabrics, etc. The firm mainly focuses on hotels, resorts, spas etc. And they are usually upgrading what has already been put. Making 2 star hotels into 5 star hotels. I was able to see their materials library and learn a lot about process work. I was very fortunate to get the chance to visit this fabulous firm. Below are a few of their works that they have done. All of which are amazing.

On our last day we went to a beautiful chapel called Chapel of St. Ignatius in seattle and we sketched the chapel for a few hours. Here are a few sketches of mine:

Wheelchair Experience

My wheelchair experience was very interesting and not at all what I expected. I went through a lot of difficulties, more than I had imagined. But it taught me a lot about design and how to for now on always be sure to make sure ADA is always included in a design.
In this picture the counter height is perfect for me to pick up my coffee but where i had ordered my coffee it was extremely high and I could barley see over the counter.

In this picture there was actually a sidewalk that was closed down because it was being reconstructed and there for my only choice was to go upstairs which I obviously couldn't do.

In this picture Marit is helping my push my self up the hill because I wasn't strong enough to do it on my own, which made me respect the strenght of handicap people because it takes a ton of muscle in your arms

There were a ton of little bumps in the sidewalk and even in buildings that made it a struggle just to roll over those bumps.

Design Process Poster

This is a poster of the process work it took me to get to my bench, the Torrent. As you can see in the poster I took multiple steps to get to where the bench is now, and many more steps as well that aren't shown. I think the poster turned out ok, but definatley needs some improvements! I really enjoy working in InDesign and know how to work it pretty well.

My Bench- The Torrent

This is my bench that I created through a found object. I used the elements and principles that were in the found object and put them into my bench. More about this process can be found in the labels 197SP11 and the title is Design Process of Torrent Bench.

Space for my "Torrent" Bench

This space was made specifically for my bench that I created. I kept my space all white and decided to add color because I wanted to show the form and shapes of the structures. I pictured these structures, walk-ways, and bench all in a botanical garden and also pictured the structures being made out of ashlar. I chose ashlar because I think it would go great with the materials of my bench.

Sketchbook Refelction

This reflection is pretty self-explanatory because it is written in the picture, but pretty much for my sketchbook I was asked to write a reflection on how I felt about the whole project and any particular sketches. I was also asked to use my hand-drafted lettering which I wish I had spent more time writing this and making my letters look better.

Point, Line, Plane Progression

This is yet another project in my Spring ID 102 class and only parts of the project are shown above. This project has numerous steps to it. The first step which is not shown above was that the students were given 9 different words (examples: centered, stretched, tension, dynamic, etc.). With each of those words we were given 9 boxes and we had to place a single point in the box to describe each of the 9 words. From there, with the 9 dots we had created from the words we had to add only 4 lines to the single dot to enchance the words. We then had to pick our two favorite words that we thought we're showed through the point and lines the best and those two had to be volumized. We created numerous study models to once again try and enhance the words we picked. In the pictures above you can see from the left side those were the two that I had chosen to put on my final, the words are equilibrium and static. Then those two were combined using the elements and principles that the possesed into another model that is referred to as the addition model. From the addition model we created a subtraction model where we had the same layout as the addition model but we made it as if something had went it to it and sliced out a particular chunk. For my subtraction model I tried to make it as if a triangle had come by and cut up from bottom to top. Our fifth model, which is referred to as manipulation, was created through adding color. Then the last model created, serial planes, was to create the subtraction model into only serial planes going in one direction.

Wall Project

This is another project in my studio class that was to create a wall. Each picture starting from the top is the process I took to get to the bottom picture, my wall. The whole point of the assignment was to create a wall that had different elements and principles of design. Mine was the basis of gradation. It's hard to see from the bottom picture but close up and in person the circular balls are going at a gradation from up to down and back to front. Also each way you flip the wall you have a different view and look of the wall.

Sketchbook Cover

This is my cover to my sketchbook, consisting of sketches that I have drawn throughout the Spring semester. I chose to make this my cover instead of drawing something because I wanted to show something more about me through this cover. I wanted to show that I travel alot and am an adventerous person.

Resume

This resume is an current up to date that I created through InDesign and that I hope will be visually interesting to employers who looks at it. I included my logo to show how involved I am trying to be with my career goals.
